Difference between connecting to a vehicle vs. connecting to a vehicle adapter

Learn what each connection type means on the Vehicle Connection screen and how to choose the right option in the Maven mobile app.

Connecting to a vehicle

When a vehicle already exists in the company’s Fleet:

  1. Open the Vehicle Connection screen in the Maven app.

  2. Search for the vehicle number.

  3. Select the vehicle and connect.

By doing this, the driver tells the app: “I am in this vehicle.”

  • The app connects the driver to the vehicle record in the Fleet.

  • This does not automatically connect to a physical vehicle adapter.

Connecting to a vehicle adapter

A vehicle adapter (VDA) is the device installed in the truck that sends vehicle data to the Maven app over Bluetooth.

When the vehicle is paired to an adapter

If the vehicle is paired to a vehicle adapter in the Fleet:

  • The Maven app:

    • Searches for the Bluetooth signal from that specific adapter.

    • Attempts to connect only to that adapter.

  • The app does not search for or connect to any other nearby adapters.

In this case, the driver:

  • Connects to the vehicle in the Fleet, and

  • Connects to the Vehicle Adapter via Bluetooth.

When the vehicle is not paired to an adapter

If the vehicle is not paired to a vehicle adapter:

  • The Maven app does not attempt to connect to an adapter automatically.

  • The app waits until the driver selects an adapter (for example, by tapping Select Adapter on the Vehicle Connection screen).

In this case, the driver:

  • Connects to the vehicle only,

  • Has no adapter connection until they manually choose one.

“Unknown Vehicle” on the Vehicle Connection screen

On the Vehicle Connection screen, the driver may see an option called Unknown Vehicle.

This means:

  • The mobile device detects a vehicle adapter nearby via Bluetooth.

  • That adapter is not currently paired to any vehicle in the company’s Fleet.

When the driver taps Unknown Vehicle:

  1. The Maven app connects to that vehicle adapter.

  2. The adapter reads the truck’s VIN.

  3. The app searches the company’s Fleet for that VIN:

    • If the VIN already exists in the Fleet:

      • The app finds the existing vehicle.

      • The app pulls the vehicle number from the Fleet.

      • The app connects the driver to that vehicle.

    • If the VIN is new to the Fleet:

      • The vehicle does not yet exist.

      • The app prompts the driver to connect a new vehicle, creating a new vehicle in the Fleet.

Quick reference

  • Connect to a vehicle

    • Driver tells the app what vehicle they are in.

  • Connect to a vehicle adapter

    • App connects via Bluetooth to the specific adapter paired to that vehicle.

    • App ignores all other nearby adapters.

  • Unknown Vehicle

    • App detects an unpaired adapter.

    • App uses the adapter’s VIN to:

      • Match an existing vehicle in the Fleet, or

      • Create and connect a new vehicle if the VIN is new.
