Driving exemptions in the mobile app

Use short-haul and adverse conditions exemptions correctly

Overview

Some drivers can use special FMCSA exemptions from the normal Hours of Service rules. The Maven mobile app supports two key exemptions:

  • Short-haul (16-hour) exemption

  • Adverse driving conditions exemption

The app does not support the agricultural commodity exemption as a dedicated option.

Short-haul (16-hour) exemption

What it means

For eligible short-haul operations that stay within 150 air miles of the home base:

  • Drivers may work up to 16 hours on one qualifying day in a cycle.

  • A full 30-minute break is still required after 8 hours of driving, as usual.

This exemption can be used only once per 60/70-hour work cycle, and only when all FMCSA criteria are met.

Adverse driving conditions exemption

What it means

If a driver encounters unexpected bad weather or road conditions (for example, sudden snow, accidents, road closures), the HOS rules may allow:

  • Up to 2 extra hours of driving time to safely reach a safe stopping place or destination.

What to do

  • Notify the driver manager or dispatcher that the adverse conditions exemption is being used.

  • Use this exemption only when conditions genuinely qualify under FMCSA definitions.

Use exemptions in the Maven app

  1. In the Maven mobile app, locate the red box on the right side of the HOS or main status screen.

  2. Tap the red box to open available exemptions.

  3. Select:

    • Adverse driving conditions for weather/road events.

    • 16-hour exemption for qualifying short-haul scenarios.

Follow company policy for when each exemption is allowed.

Agricultural commodity exemption (not supported)

Maven does not directly support the agricultural commodity exemption as a special status.

If this exemption is required by a carrier policy:

  1. Set HOS status to Personal conveyance (Off duty) as directed by the safety team.

  2. Add a clear note in the log, such as: “exemption”.

  3. Follow internal safety and compliance guidance for documentation and recordkeeping.
