Fixing address and geocoding issues
Correct bad locations to improve routing and assignment
Overview
Accurate addresses and geocodes drive good routing and navigation. Bad location data creates:
-
Unassigned orders.
-
Inefficient routes.
-
Drivers arriving at the wrong place.
This article shows you how to spot bad addresses, fix them, and prevent repeat issues.
How to recognize address and geocode problems
Look for these signs:
-
A stop appears far from its real city or even the right state.
-
An order covers a massive detour compared to others in the same market.
-
Orders stay unassigned even though capacity and constraints look fine.
-
Drivers consistently report that navigation takes them to the wrong structure or gate.
Step 1: Find problem locations
-
Use the map
-
Open the stop or order and:
-
View the map pin.
-
Confirm whether the pin sits near the expected area.
-
-
-
Check unassigned and outlier stops
-
Filter for:
-
Unassigned orders.
-
Stops with very long deadhead or strange routing.
-
-
These often point to bad location data.
-
-
Capture field feedback
-
Record recurring driver or dispatcher comments:
-
“The map sends us to the wrong side of the building.”
-
“This customer always shows up in the wrong city.”
-
-
Step 2: Fix the address and geocode
Exact steps depend on your permissions, but the pattern is the same.
-
Correct the address
-
Open the Location or Customer record.
-
Validate:
-
Street, city, state, postal code, and country.
-
-
Fix obvious mistakes and save.
-
-
Adjust the geocode
-
If the address is right but the pin is wrong:
-
Move the pin to the correct location if your tools allow it.
-
Place the pin near:
-
Truck gates or docks.
-
A safe and legal truck access point.
-
-
-
-
Refresh affected orders
-
Confirm that new or current orders:
-
Link to the updated location.
-
Show the correct pin on the map.
-
-
-
Re‑run planning
-
Re‑optimize affected routes or attempt to assign previously unassigned orders.
-
Confirm that routing now behaves as expected.
-
Step 3: Prevent repeat issues
-
Fix the base location, not just the shipment
-
When you find bad data on a shipment:
-
Update the underlying location record, not only that single order.
-
-
This ensures future shipments inherit the fix.
-
-
Standardize high‑volume locations
-
For major customers:
-
Confirm address and geocode once.
-
Set correct tags (APPT, LFGT, etc.).
-
Set realistic service times and dock hours.
-
-
-
Implement a feedback loop
-
Ask dispatchers and drivers to:
-
Flag bad locations every time they see them.
-
Provide photos, gate numbers, or directions in notes.
-
-
Review and update locations on a regular cadence
-
