Using HOS for planning

How to check available hours before assigning a route.

planning goals

Use HOS data to ensure route assignments fit within legal and safe limits. Before assigning a trip, confirm that the selected driver has:

  • Enough driving hours for the planned distance plus a buffer.

  • Sufficient on‑duty hours for driving, pre/post‑trip, loading, unloading, and likely delays.

  • Adequate cycle hours remaining to complete the trip without approaching a reset mid‑route.

  • Time and plan for any required breaks.

  • No active violations or restrictions that would limit eligibility.

Using HOS Compliance for planning

  1. Open Compliance → Hours of Service.

  2. Filter drivers by terminal, group, or region to match the planning pool.

  3. For each candidate driver, review:

    • Driving Hours Remaining

    • On‑Duty Hours Remaining

    • Cycle Hours Remaining

    • Time to Break

  4. Check the dashboard for any approaching or active violations, uncertified logs, or other red flags.

  5. Select a driver whose available hours align with the planned route and assign the trip in Trip Workflow or the relevant dispatch module.

  6. For long or complex trips, consider:

    • Planned break times

    • Possible relays or swaps if cycle hours are tight

    • Impact of potential add‑on freight or detours

Planning tips

  • Treat HOS checks as a required step before assigning any long or high‑risk trip.

  • Re‑check hours mid‑day for drivers handling multi‑stop or variable‑length work.

  • Use patterns from HOS reports (e.g., frequent violations late in shifts) to adjust scheduling, shift design, or route construction.

  • Coordinate with compliance when planning unusual or borderline assignments so documentation and decisions stay aligned.
