Manage breaks and resets in the app

Use 30-minute breaks, 10-hour resets, and 34-hour cycle resets correctly

Overview

To stay compliant with FMCSA regulations under the Maven ELD standard ruleset, drivers must follow specific requirements for:

  • 30-minute break

  • 10-hour daily reset

  • 34-hour cycle reset

This article explains how each works and what to check if timers do not update correctly in the app.

30-minute break

What it is

  • A 30-minute break is required within 8 hours of driving.

  • Tracked by the app’s 8-hour break timer.

How it works

  • The break must be continuous.

  • Can be taken in On duty or Off duty status (per ruleset configuration).

  • After a valid 30-minute break, the 8-hour break timer resets.

Troubleshooting tips

If the break timer does not reset:

  • Confirm the break was at least 30 minutes and uninterrupted.

  • Confirm it was logged in an allowed status (On duty/Off duty as configured).

  • If needed, change to a new duty status (for example, Off duty → On duty) to prompt a timer refresh.

10-hour daily reset

What it is

  • Drivers may drive up to 11 hours and be on duty up to 14 hours per day.

  • After that, a 10-hour continuous break is required to reset drive and shift clocks.

How it works

  • The break must be taken before the 14-hour shift timer reaches 0:00.

  • The break must be continuous and at least 10 hours.

  • Can be taken in Off duty or Sleeper berth status (or qualifying split combinations if enabled).

Troubleshooting tips

If the 10-hour reset does not apply:

  • Confirm the break lasted a full 10 hours and remained in qualifying statuses.

  • Check that no duty status changes occurred during the break.

  • Verify that time zone and date on the device are correct.

34-hour cycle reset

What it is

  • Drivers have a 70-hour limit over an 8-day cycle (or 80 hours in some Texas operations).

  • The cycle includes all drive time and on-duty time.

How it works

  • A cycle reset requires a continuous 34-hour break.

  • The break can be taken in Off duty or Sleeper berth status.

  • A 10-hour break does not reset the cycle clock.

Troubleshooting tips

If the cycle does not reset:

  • Confirm the break was at least 34 hours and uninterrupted.

  • Verify that duty status was correctly set to Off duty or Sleeper berth for the entire reset period.

  • Check for status gaps, edits, or device clock issues.
