Re-Optimizing Routes

Overview

Re‑optimization updates existing routes when conditions change, without rebuilding the plan from scratch. Use re‑optimization to add new freight, rebalance work, or respond to driver or equipment changes.

When to re‑optimize

• New shipments arrive after initial planning

• Drivers call off or equipment changes

• Routes appear heavily unbalanced

• Time windows, service times, or constraints change

How to re‑optimize

1. Select the scope

   • Choose:

     • All routes in a terminal or territory, or

     • A subset of routes plus unassigned shipments

2. Lock critical items (if supported)

   • Lock:

     • Finalized routes

     • Key stops or appointments

3. Run optimization

   • Trigger Optimize for the selected scope.

   • Confirm active constraints (capacity, time windows, skills).

4. Review results

   • Check:

     • Route count, miles, and hours

     • Load balance across drivers

     • Assignment of previously unassigned freight

Re‑optimization after dispatch (if allowed)

When mid‑day changes are allowed:

• Lock completed and in‑progress stops.

• Re‑optimize remaining work.

• Coordinate with dispatch to communicate changes to drivers.
